Chinese New Year 2008 at Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands Resort is in the state of Pahang, Malaysia, less than an hour's journey by road from the city of Kuala Lumpur where I reside. Popularly known as the Genting - City of Entertainment, about 2,000 meters above sea level, it is the cool hill destination to head to if you want to gather your family together for a fun-filled and affordable vacation. It won't dent your purse very much, as you'll be really spoilt for choices with the numerous affordable rooms made available for everyone, and where restaurants, eateries, shopping facilities and entertainment activities abound to suit your budget.

Genting is truly Malaysia's favourite all-in-one family holiday destination and a key tourist attraction, with 6 hotels providing 10,000 hotel rooms in total. One of them, First World Hotel, the world's largest, itself offers 6,118 rooms. Besides, this City of Entertainment offers world-class leisure and entertainment attractions that include theme parks with over 50 fun rides, casinos and 3 mega multi-purpose venues for events, business conventions and international shows/performances. Not to be missed is its Genting Skyway - the longest cable car in Southeast Asia, spanning 3.38km from the midhill at Gohtong Jaya to Highlands Hotel at the hilltop. Genting Skyway, at maximum speed of 21.6km per hour is also the fastest mono cable car system in the world.

Every Chinese New Year Eve or the day before, for the past 6 years, my beloved spouse and I will gather our family up at Genting Highlands Resort, enjoy and spend a night or two before returning home in the evening of Chinese New Year day. We don't patronize the casino at all, but indulge ourselves with the glorious food galore at buffets, window shopping, experience fun-filled activities at the indoor/outdoor theme parks, see the international shows if available, or just walking around and enjoy the cool refreshing air.

To usher in the Chinese New Year of the Rat, there were the traditional dragon dances, band performances, and others just before the big bang of firecrackers (held on 10 flag poles with lengths as high) and display of fireworks at 12.00 am. A thrilling night, indeed!

Here's sharing some captures of our recent CNY vacation at Genting from February 5-7, 2008.
